Mammoth Road Trip March 13, 2026

I have been wanting to ski  Mammoth Mountain for years. It was my "home" mountain as I was growing up in Southern California. Michele and I decided, roadtrip, Mammoth Mountain here we come. We left Truckee early Tuesday morning to hit the slopes at Mammoth.  We were not disappointed, the conditions were a bit firm but very skiable. You can follow the sun at Mammoth and find fun runs all day long. We treated ourselves to slopeside lodging at Mammoth Mountain Inn which was fantastic. This may become a yearly tradition...

Awesome Mountain. If you get the chance, go!!

The sawtooth mountains west of Bridgeport on the drive down from Truckee. Michele’s comment was "Queue the western music".

The Minarerts, viewed from the top ridgeline at Mammoth. In the summer you can take the road to Devils Postpile and the Minarets. A spectacular area.

Chair 23 with Scottys, the groomed run to the right. It was super fun. Unfortunately due to the rain the Sierras experienced, all that good looking snow that was not groomed was pretty much unskiable.

St Antons run, with Cornice bowl to the upper right. This is one of my all time favorite runs

Me and the Mammoth at Mcoys Station

Unfortunately we learned there were no "real" mammoths found around Mammoth Mountain. I always thought the name Mammoth was due to the size of the mountain, I guess i was right.

Still skiing the expert runs at 69 and 67 and loving it.

Mountainside Grill with a view of Chair 1 center and Scottys to the right This was our nightly dinner spot. We would watch the snow cats grooming the slopes.

Parting shot, the Mammoth, in the parking lot at the main lodge. The end of another awesome roadtrip.

SF Bay Area Road Trip March 9, 2026

What with the lack of snow in Tahoe, we decided to visit friends in the San Francisco Bay Area. We spent a beautiful CA bluebird day exploring the Presidio Tunnel Tops park and stopped for a quick bite at the marketplace in the SF Ferry Building.

View of Golden Gate Bridge from the Presidio Tunnel Top park.

Great natural kids play area in the park.

Looking out at the sailboats on the SF Bay, where Michele and I learned to sail. Who would have thought we would be living and cruising around the Mediterranean someday…

Palace of Fine Arts in the distance.

The park reminds me a bit of the High Line Park in NYC with all of the beautiful plants and views.

The crew, Linda, John, Michele and Sue, on our return walk from Fort Point.

First time in shorts since last fall in Montenegro.

Fort Point and Golden Gate Bridge, an nice walk from the park.

Hungry Great Heron going in for the kill.

Success, a fat little mole or vole or some other equally unlucky little fellow.

Hmm, how and i going to eat this fat little treat? He eventually flew off with his lunch before we could see him figure it out. It was a regular Wild Kingdom moment.

Parting shot of the unique gardens in the park

Cool mermaid sculpture on the SF waterfront by the Ferry Building.

Full sculpture, very creative and impressive. A nice end to a fun day.
